Samanar Hills are located in Keelakuyilkudi Village which is surrounded by beautiful nature. This hill is also known as Samanar Malai in Tamil as Malai means Hills. The hill has many ancient inscriptions and prominent sculptures that are seen in history and the Jainism has spread widely during the ancient times. Karuppu Sami Temple is on the hilltop of Samanar Hills of Madurai.

The place has Jain School at the top of the hill. The caves have more than 2000 years old Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions as well as Vatteluttu writings. The Jain Monastery on the hill is known as Maadevi Perumpalli, the place where the nuns and monks come here to get education.

Architecture of the Hill

At the main entrance of the cave, tourists can find the most religious sculptures of Yaksha, Yakshi, Gomateshwara, and Mahaveera. The major attractions of this hill were the Settipodavu and Penchipallam, the two sculptures. Most of the inscriptions were found around the entrance of the cave. Tourists can also see the flat stone or the stone beds that were used by the monks to rest.

Samanar Hill is an ideal place to spend quality time as the place is surrounded by the perfect greenery. You can see people visiting this place do meditation as the place is calm and spiritual.
