Jama Masjid Delhi is known as “Masjid e Jahan Numa” and is one of the largest mosques in India. The Masjid was built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor. The building construction was started in 1644 and completed in 1656. The masjid was started by Imam Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari. The masjid has 3 great gates and two 40 meters minarets build with strips of red sandstone and white marbles. More than 25000 members can be accommodated in the courtyard. Tourists are not allowed into the building on Fridays at the time of prayers.

Jama Masjid History

The Mosque was built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor. Over one million rupees were spent on the construction of the Masjid. After the death of Mumtaz Mahal the wife of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor decided to shift the capital city to Delhi from Agra. He found Shahjahanabad which is also called the Old Delhi. Under the supervision of Wazir Saadullah Khan, more than 5000 artisans built the masjid. The construction took 6 years to complete the Masjid. The mosque houses several Islamic religious significance such as old transcript of Quran printed on deerskin, sandals, red beard hair of Prophet Mohammad and the footmarks.  

 Architecture and Design

The Masjid is built with expansive stones like red sandstone and white marbles. This is accessible from the 3 sides. East Face with 35 steps, North Face with 39 steps, and South Face with 33 steps. The Masjid faces the west direction. The eastern gate is the largest of all the gates and is served as the Royal entrance. The roof of the mosque is covered with the 3 marble domes stripped alternatively with white and black marbles. The Masjid measures 80 meters long, 27 meters wide and 41 meters in its highest point with a traditional hall for praying.

The domes are covered with gold adornments with 2 lofty minarets. Each minaret has 130 steps and only the southern minaret was open to the visitors with a fee charged. The courtyard is in front of the mosque that occupies 408 square feet and accommodates 25,000 members for prayers.

Timings of Jama Masjid

The Masjid will be opened on all days of the week. The timings are from mornings 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from the evenings 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

The Minaret will be opened from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Time to spend

One can spend a maximum of 2- 3 Hours to explore the architecture and many things.

The entry is free of cost.

Photography

Photography is allowed inside the Masjid but it charges.

For climbing the southern minaret Rs 100 will be charged.
