Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple story

The Mannarasala Temple located in Kerala is dedicated to the Serpent Gods. The temple is located near the forest has a serene and eco-friendly atmosphere. The temple houses nearly 30,000 serpent god idols. The temple has different myths, beliefs and rituals. Every rite in the temple is strictly followed. As the temple situated in the forest area it is been surrounded by four ponds. The temple has a unique speciality, that is the turmeric paste which is given as Prasad it is believed that the turmeric powder has a great curative power.

The temple is famous for the rite known as Uruli which means a brass vessel, it is believed that the one who wishes should tilt or turn over the Uruli downwards after completion of their wish they should return back to the temple and turn it back to its original position. Unlike other temples, this temple rituals are been carried by an elder women known as Amma (Pujarin).The temple has a custom that, whoever wants to thank the Serpent god or Lord Nagaraja one should donate Serpent idol to the temple. The  Ayilyam is a famous festival which is celebrated here a great crowd of devotees gather at the temple during this eve. This temple is widely believed for the couples to have children and also for Sarpa dosha nivarana that is to overcome from snake curse.

Serpent worship, or Naga puja, is at the heart of Mannarasala Temple’s rituals. Devotees, often clad in traditional attire, throng the temple to seek the blessings of Nagaraja and other serpent deities. Offerings of milk, turmeric paste, and flowers are made to the snake idols, symbolizing devotion and seeking protection from harm. Special ceremonies like ‘Uruli Kamazhthal’ involve placing a bell metal vessel in front of the deity as a form of supplication. Another unique ritual is ‘Noorum Palum,’ where a mixture of rice flour and turmeric is offered to the snake groves.
