Legend says that there was a demon \u2018Tripurasura\u2019 did penance to please Lord Shiva. In case Tripurasura forgot his vows, the Lord would have to stop him in any way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lord prayed to Goddess Parvati to help him for stopping the chaos of Tirpurasura\u2019s action. Goddess Parvati came with her new incarnation with the name of Kamaja. They both combined in the form of \u2018ardh-narya-nateshwar\u2019 , on the Kartik Poornima, they killed that demon and the day is celebrating as \u2018Tripurasura Poornima\u2019. The Lord blessed demon\u2019s wives, i.e. Dakini and Shakini, with immortality for their existence without Tripurasura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the war, Lord Shiva sat on the hills then all god were praying and pleased the Lord Shiva. All God requested to make this place his abode. Lord Shiva thus manifested himself as he \u2018Bhimshankar Jyotirlingam\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is believed that the sweat that poured forth from Lord Shiva\u2019s body after the battle formed the Bhimarathi River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The temple architecture is Nagara style of architecture. The Bhimashankar Temple is having old and new structure. The Temple Shikhara and Sabha mandapam were built by Nana Phadnavis in mid 18 Century. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maratha ruler also made endowments to this temple to facilitate the carrying out, of worship services. This Jyotirlinga\u2019s sanctum is lower than another Jytorilingas.
