Gandhi Memorial Museum Madurai is one of the most famous places to visit in Madurai. This place played a crucial role in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. This city was first recognized for its Meenakshi Sundareswara Temple.  This is where Mahatma Gandhi entered into Meenakshi Temple along with the Harijans, the untouchables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gandhi Memorial Museum not only holds the Gandhi aspects but also holds the high historical significance. A wide range of activities are conducted at the museum for the comfort of tourists and the local. The Museum offers a variety of classes for the people every day such as yoga, pranayama, meditation, Hindi and Sanskrit courses and self-employment classes and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd<\/sup> every year is\ncelebrated very grandly celebrated for 5 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gandhi Memorial Museum Madurai is a very historical\nbuilding that was used as a palace of Rani Mangammal from Naick Dynasty. The\npalace is known as Tamukkam Palace that was built during 1670 AD. The area is\nspread across 13 acres of land and is very attractive for its finest\narchitecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The palace is under the rulers of other dynasties and also the colonial era of East India Company. British District Collector of Madurai used this palace as the official residence. Later, after the palace is converted into Gandhi Memorial Museum by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi it was inaugurated in 1959 by Jawaharlal Nehru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architecture of Gandhi Memorial Museum<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The architecture of the Gandhi Memorial Museum is a very attractive thing that one cannot take away their eyes. In front of the Museum, one can see the hut, called Gandhi Kutir situated in the south of the main building. It resembles the original hut of Mahatma Gandhi in Sevagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ground floor has a section of Village industry and Khadi. There is an open-air theatre situated to the south of the main building. The theatre has the capacity of accommodating around 8000 people at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum will be open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from\n2:00 PM to 5:45 PM all days of the week except on Fridays<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Madurai Airport to the Museum \u2013 14 KM and can reach within\n40 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
