The Mosque was built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor. Over one million rupees were spent on the construction of the Masjid. After the death of Mumtaz Mahal the wife of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor decided to shift the capital city to Delhi from Agra. He found Shahjahanabad which is also called the Old Delhi. Under the supervision of Wazir Saadullah Khan, more than 5000 artisans built the masjid. The construction took 6 years to complete the Masjid. The mosque houses several Islamic religious significance such as old transcript of Quran printed on deerskin, sandals, red beard hair of Prophet Mohammad and the footmarks. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0Architecture and Design<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
The Masjid is built with expansive stones like red sandstone and white marbles. This is accessible from the 3 sides. East Face with 35 steps, North Face with 39 steps, and South Face with 33 steps. The Masjid faces the west direction. The eastern gate is the largest of all the gates and is served as the Royal entrance. The roof of the mosque is covered with the 3 marble domes stripped alternatively with white and black marbles. The Masjid measures 80 meters long, 27 meters wide and 41 meters in its highest point with a traditional hall for praying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The domes are covered with gold adornments with 2 lofty\nminarets. Each minaret has 130 steps and only the southern minaret was open to\nthe visitors with a fee charged. The courtyard is in front of the mosque that\noccupies 408 square feet and accommodates 25,000 members for prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Masjid will be opened on all days of the week.
