The museum was established in 1949 and from then it became heaven for the people who are very eager to explore history, heritage and archaeology. The museum houses more than 2 lakh works and artifacts from ancient to the modern which covers all the artifacts around 5000 years. In 1949 an exhibition as setup in the premises of Rashtrapati Bhawan. As this exhibition has a massive success the government decided to set up a permanent National Museum. On August 15th, 1949, the museum was inaugurated by C Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India in the Rashtrapati Bhawan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n1955 the museum was shifted to the current location and was inaugurated by the\nPrime Minister of India in 1960. The museum houses 16 departments that preserve the ancient heritage. They are <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harappan Gallery \u2013 This gallery is known as Indus Valley Civilization and Indo Saraswati Civilization. Here Harappan artifacts are preserved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maurya,\nShunga and Satvahana Arts Gallery \u2013 This Gallery houses the objects from 4<sup>th<\/sup>\nCentury BC to 1<sup>st<\/sup> Century BC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gupta Gallery \u2013 The Gupta Dynasty\u2019s scriptures and artwork from the 4<sup>th<\/sup> century and 6<sup>th<\/sup> century CE are displayed in this Gupta Gallery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decorative\nArts Gallery \u2013 This gallery is divided into 2 sections. One consists of objects\nmade of Ivory, Ceramics, and Jade. The other consists of metal and wood\nobjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kushana Gallery \u2013 This gallery houses the arts and things of the Kushana Dynasty rulers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medieval Arts Gallery \u2013 This gallery is divided into 2 sections. Early Medieval and Late Medieval which has a combination of Vardhanas, Maitrakas, Pratiharas, Pallavas, Cholas, and Chalukya. Chandelas, Hoysalas, Nayalas, Parmaras, Gajapatis, Chauhans and Senas houses in this Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronze\nGallery \u2013 This gallery exhibits Natraja, Parsvath, Chubisi and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miniature\nPaintings Gallery \u2013 This gallery consists of 17000 miniature paintings. These\ncategorizes the various periods of Deccani, Rajasthani, Pahari, Mughal etc in\nthis Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evolution\nof Indian Scripts and Coins Gallery \u2013 The gallery displays the Indian Coin\nsystem and Scripts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddhist Artefacts Gallery \u2013 This Gallery comprises of Terracotta, Stone, Wood, Bronze, and Stucco. Hinayana, Vajrayana and Mahayana are the 3 principals of Buddhist forms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manuscripts\nGallery \u2013 The manuscript gallery houses palm leaf, metals, paper, birch bark,\nparchment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maritime\nHeritage Gallery \u2013 This gallery exhibits the naval tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coins\nGallery \u2013 This gallery exhibits the traditional to modern ways. From coins\nsystem to the credit\/debit cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Central Asian Gallery \u2013 This exhibits various wooden, silk banners, terracotta sculptures, wall paintings, pottery and porcelain objects and objects made from leather, fiber, grass, gold and silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanjore and Mysore Paintings Gallery \u2013 This gallery displays Indian Mythology, Epics, Gods, Goddesses, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-Columbian\nand Western Art Gallery \u2013 This gallery consists of objects from different\ncountries like Inca.
