Kankeshwar Temple Story:
Kankeshwar Temple situated on the top of the hill of Alibag is dedicated to Lord Shiva. To darshan Lord Kankeshwar, one has to climb about 700 to 750 steps. From the top of the hill, one can get to watch the spectacular view of the Mumbai City, Arabian Sea, Under Fort and Khanderi Fort. The steps have a special step named as “Deva Chapa” it is believed that the Lord himself stepped here. The hill also has a place named Gaimundi where one can get fresh water. The temple has a beautiful Step well called Brahma Kund filled with water especially in monsoons. One can also get a dip in this water body and get refreshed. This step well is made of red stone. The red stone step well with fresh blue water looks spectacular. There are many small temples around the hill. The temple architecture emits the Hoysala style. This temple was constructed in the year 1764. The temple has a fresh waterbody known as Pushkarni or water tank, this water is used for the temple purposes. the main temple houses the Maha Shiv Ling which is silver coated it is believed that this temple came into existence since the Pandavas period.
