Kartikeya the youngest son of Lord Shiva and Parvathi got angry and resided to Kronch Hills from Kailash. Then both Shiva and Parvati came here and stayed here in the form of Parvati as Mallika and Shiva as Arjun. From then the place is known as Mallikarjuna.

As per Shiva Puranam, Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu had an argument for the Supremacy of Creation. Then Shiva penetrated an endless pillar of light and asked Lord Brahma and Vishnu to find the end points of the light on either direction. Both travelled individually on either side to find the endpoint. Lord Brahma to become the supreme said that he found his end point. Lord Vishnu refused to tell the false statement about the light.
