Structures Inside Panhala Fort
Andhar Bhavadi: Whenever the army surrounds the fort, the first thing is to poison the main water source of the fort. To board this Adil Shah commissioned the building of Andhar Bavadi. This is a 3-story structure with winding staircases that have an old well which was the main water source for the Fort. There are breaks in the wall so that soldiers can permanently be stationed. There are no. of hidden escape routes here which lead outside the fort.
Ambarkhana: This is situated in the center of the fort, were 3 repositories built in the Bijapur style architecture. They enabled Shivaji to withstand a 5-month attack by Siddi Johar. This building consists of 3 Kothis- Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati.
Kalavanticha Mahal: This Mahal is also called as “Nayakini Sajja”, which means “Courtesans’ Terrace room”. It had become a complete wreck with only traces of ornamental work on the ceiling. This was used during the occupation of the fort by the Bahmani Sultanate as a Rang Mahal.
Sajja Kothi: This is a one-stored structure built by Ibrahim Adil Shah. It’s also a Bijapur styled architecture. This is where Shivaji imprisoned his son, Sambhaji when he threatened to defect to Aurangzeb.
Teen Darwaza: The Teen Darwaza was the 3 double gateways of the fort – the others being the Char Darwaja and Wagh Darwaja. The char Darwaza was destroyed during the British attack. The teen Darwaza gate is the main entrance to the fort located on North of the Andhar Bhavai on the west side of the fort.
Rajdindi Bastion: This is the hidden exit of the fort to be used in the time of emergency. Shivaji uses this escape exit to Vishlgad during the battle of Pavan Khind. Rajdindi is still unbroken.
