Assam State Museum is also called as Assam Rajyik State Museum situated at the heart of Guwahati. The Museum is one of the most famous in North East India as it was rich in the culture of ancient as well as modern history.
The museum was established in 1940 and was set up by Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti to showcase the sculpture, history, and handicrafts of North East India. In the year 1953, the museum was under control of the state immediately after the death of Kanklal Baruah.
Inside Museum:
The Museum consists of different segments which display the different sect of history. Manuscript section, Arms and ammunition section, prehistoric terracotta section, numismatics and metallic sculptures section, epigraphy section are the different sections.
Manuscript section showcases ancient manuscripts of Assamese, Myanmar’s and Tai.
Arms and Ammunition section showcases the swords, armors (band) of Medieval and Mughal Period and also the ammunition from World War II.
Prehistoric Terracotta Section is about the Indus Valley Civilization and terracotta objects.
Numismatics and metallic sculpture section showcase the collection of Vishnu, Buddha and Goddess Durga.
Epigraphy section shows the collection of Stone and copper inscription of the 5th – 18th century.
