Kaziranga National Park Assam is one of the famous among the national parks of India. The park is situated between Golaghat and Nagaon the two districts of Assam. The park is located on the banks of River Brahmaputra and regarded as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The park is established in about 430 square KM. 2/3rd Park of the place is home for One-Horned Rhinoceroses of the World. According to the 2015 census the Rhino population in the Kaziranga National Park is 2401. Out of which 205 cubs, 251 juveniles, 294 sub-adults and 1651 adults are recorded.
Kaziranga National Park Assam was declared to be the highest density of Tigers of all protected areas in the World in 2006. The park is home for huge population of Swamp deer, Wild Water Buffalo and Elephant and is the shelter for important Birdlife area of International birdlife.
History of Kaziranga National Park
In 1904 Lord Curzon with his wife Mary Curzon visited the park in search of One-horned Rhinos but they didn’t find any of them. In June 1905 Mary Curzon decided to take some of the measures to save rhinos by increasing the Sanctuary up to 232 square KM.
Flora of the Park
The park is home for rich variety of flora which attracts millions of tourists all over the world every year. The park is entitled as the “Hotspot of Biodiversity” in India. The park shelter major types of vegetation like tall elephant grass, semi-evergreen forests, and short grasses. The park also contains aquatic flora such as Water Lillie’s, Lotus and water hyacinth.
Fauna of the Park
The park is the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceros. The park has 35 species of mammals, out of which 15 species are considered endangered. Wild Asiatic Water Buffalo, Swamp Deer and Elephant, Fishing Cat, Leopards, Small India Mongoose, Gray Mongoose, Golden Jackal, Sloth Bear, Civets, Indian Pangolins, Hispid Hare, Bengal fox, Chinese Pangolin, Gaur and Sambar.
The park also is the home for 42 species of reptile and 479 species of migratory and resident birds. Dolphins shelter here in Brahmaputra River.
Safaris at Kaziranga National Park
The national park offers Elephant safari and Jeep Safari for the tourists who visit there.
- Elephant Safari:
The elephant safari in the national park gives a better view of wildlife and Rhinos. This Safari is organized by the Forest Department in the mornings and in the evenings. This Elephant Safari allows mahouts and 4 tourists at a time. The safari charge includes riding and entrance fee excluding the camera fee.
- Jeep Safari:
The jeep safari can be enjoyed in Kaziranga. The forest department organizes 2 times a day jeep safari. The jeep allows 6 members at a time. The jeep Safari can cover large area than Elephant safari.
The jeep safari is offered from the Central Range Kohora, Western Range Bagori, Eastern Range Agoratuli and Burapahar Range.
Timings
The timings for Elephant safari is in Mornings from 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM and in afternoons from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
The Jeep safari timings are mornings from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM and in afternoons 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Entry Fee
The entry fee to the park is Rs 100 per person for Indians.
For Foreigners, the entry fee is Rs 650 per person.
Best time to visit
The national park will be open from November 1st to April 30th every year.
