Kali Temple is one among the 52 Shakti Peet, It is located in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. This river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. Right now temple is located on the banks of the small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hugli River.
The myth about Kalighat Temple :
There was a king called Dakshaprajapathi, he has a daughter called Dakshayini (Sati). She married Shiva against the wishes of her father. one day Daksha planned to perform a great Yagna he invited all gods and goddess but he didn’t invite his daughter and son in law but still, Sati went to the great Yagna without invitation and she faced great insult by her father, Unable to bear this insult she sacrificed herself in the performing Homa. Lord Shiva came to know about that incident he was angered and start doing Rudra Thandava with Sati’s Body throughout the Universe, other gods trying to come down Shiva’s Dance, the disk of the Vishnu corpse out the Sati’s body, whose various body parts fell in different parts of Places and those places today we called it has Shaktipeetas.so one of the foot toes of right leg was fell at Kalighat. Hence it is one among those Shaktipeet.
History of Kalighat Temple
According to the h, story kali temple is 200 yrs old in its present form, although it was refered by the Mansar Bhasan, composed in the 15th century and Kavi Kankan chandi of the 17th century.According to the evidence kali temple was there at the time Gupta’s rule. Which became the coinage with Gupta rulers.
The original temple was a small hut at the time of 16th century and constructed by Manasingha. The present temple was reconstructed under the asupices of the Sabarna Roy chowdary from the family of Banisha in the year 1809. The Halder family claims to be an original owner of the temple and later it was disputed by the Chowdaries of Banisha. In the 1960s the temple administration committee formed with representation from the Government and Halder’s family.
The Government of Bengal taken a lots interest to improve the temple which is one of the biggest tourist attraction of Bengal. The government has released huge funds to develop and temple as well as for accommodations cum office. The temple is running by the Tourism development corporation.

5 PM to 10:30 PM
2 PM to 5 PM temple will be closed for Bhog.
