Lohagad is been derived from Marathi, which means “Loha – iron”, “Gad – Fort”, it was built in 12th century by the Raja Bhoj.  Lohagad fort is located in Lonavala which is at a distance of 10 km, the Lohagad is the fort of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was constructed in 18thcentury, the Lohagad occupies the region of Sahyadri range of mountains. The Lohagad fort divides the two rivers basins which are known as Indrayani and Pavna rivers.

The proper information of lohagad occupation is not clearly known , but the ancient stories says that the lohagad fort belongs to the periods of Satavahanas , Chalukyas , Rashtrakutas , Yadavas , Bahamanis , Nizamas , Mughals  and Marathas . The lohagad fort was under the mughal emperors  for a period of session .

In 1648 CE Chatrapati Shivaji recaptured lohagad fort from the Mughals , present it is been preserved and protected by the government of India . The rise of the lohagad is about 1033 meters above  the sea level . the lohagad also shows small water  fall near the foot hill.

Lohagad Fort SAFETY GUIDELINES:

Should carry food and water.

 

It’s not advisable to climb the fort during rainy season as it is slippery to climb.
