McLeodGanj is a Hill Station in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh located at 6831 Feet above the Sea Level. The place is known as “Little Lhasa” the short form of Dharmashala as the place is home for a large number of Tibetan Population. This place is named after the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, David McLeod in early 1850s. The hill station is surrounded by the lush greenery. Tourists have the attractions like Dal Lake and Triund. This place is famous for the Namgyal Monastery.
History
In 1850, the area was occupied by the British during the 2nd War with Anglo-Sikh and soon became the military headquarters for the place at Kangra. The military headquarters was established in the year 1849 and in 1852 the place became the administrative capital of Kangra District. The place has 2 important places of civilian settlement called McLeodGanj and Forsyth Ganj.
The place is called as the Summer Capital of India. The British Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin lived here and died at Dharmashala on his tour and is buried at St. John at Forsyth Ganj just below McLeod Ganj.
Dalai Lama 14 in the year 1960 set up the government of Tibet in exile and the place became his official residence and also home to several Buddhist monasteries. From over year, McLeodGanj became the important pilgrimages and tourist spot.

Best Time to Visit
The place offers a beautiful trip for you all year-round destinations. But the best time is during Simmers from March to June and in the winter season from November- February.

Tourists have to pack the woolen clothes and jackets along with the shoes with a good grip as the place offers the trek.
Festivals
Losar is the three days festival celebrated during the moths of February or March.
Halda is the two-day festival which symbolizes the communal unity.
Lohri is also known as Maghi agricultural Festival which is celebrated in Mid-January.
Himachal Winter Carnival, Buddha Purnima, International Himalayan Festival, Butoh Dance Festival, are the festivals celebrated in the McLeodGanj.
