Umiam Lake is the broad and scenic reservoir which attracts a large number of tourists across India. The lake is also known as “Bara Pani” meaning Big Water as it is a large number of tourists. The lake is the part of the dam which is constructed for Hydel Power Project in the Meghalaya. The lake comprises of the park which is the perfect picnic spot for a gathering of Friends, Family and Couple.
Apart from the calmness of Umiam Lake tourists can observe the daily life of the local people who come over there for fishing, searching dry sticks to light their stove.
In summers, the lakeshore looks beautiful with the Gulmohar trees and in winters the water level in the lake fades and turns blue.
Myths of Umiam Lake:
There is a captivating story behind the Lake. Umiam means “Water of Tears”. Once upon a time, there were 2 sisters from Heaven came to Meghalaya for enjoying the view. The small sister lost her way at the time of their journey. Out of deep sorrow, the elder one’s shed her tears. The tears of the elder sister thus formed as Umiam Lake.

- Boating –
Boating is the must to do a thing in the Lake. The place is surrounded by the greenery and is the perfect picturesque view for the nature lovers.
- Water sports –
The water sports are organised in the lake. One can have fun to the max of Solo Boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing.
- Trekking –
Trekking is the best idea for trekkers. Trekkers can trek through the dense forests to the Lumpongden Island.
- Fishing –
An exact place for fishing lovers. The lake is home for a variety of fishes like Catfishes and Carps.
- Boat House –
Umiam Lake is known for its Little Boathouse in Lumpongden Island. Tourists can stay in the boathouse and for this tourists have to book the Boathouse in advance. The stay is allowed only for a group of 6 members to stay at a time.
