Dainthlen Waterfall is the most popular falls in Cherrapunjee. The fall is just before reaching to Sohra turning right leads to the fall in just 5 KM. A number of tourists visit the place all throughout the year and enjoy the scenic beauty and is one of the places to visit in Cherrapunjee. The word Dainthlen is derived from Thlen which means Python in Khasi.

Legend of Dainthlen Fall

There is a small story behind this fall. According to the villagers, there used to be a huge evil python Thlen which is drenched in power and greed. Some men caught the python and destroyed it with a huge stone near the fall. The impressions of the python killed are still on the stone that shows how violently the snake struggled. Thus the fall is named after the story.

Double Decker Living Root Bridge

Overview

Double Decker Living Root Bridge is located in the dense tropical forest of Meghalaya. This is an impressive man-made and natural bridge created by Khasi tribes. The roots grow from the old rubber trees only seen in the north-eastern part. The bridges are the modifications to the wooden bridges as the roots were turned by the Khasi tribes to grow as the bridge is on the top of the river. As the place is affected by the rainfalls the wooden bridges are modified with root bridges.

The new bridges take about 15 years to become strong to bear the weight of the people cross the bridge. Some of the bridges seen here are over 500 years ago. There are 5 root bridges which are very popular in the place. The most famous bridge is the Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge.   • Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge – This Bridge is the most popular one’. The bridge is 2400 feet high and 3 KM long. The visitor must be healthy to reach this bridge because it is very high.
  • Ummunoi Root Bridge – This is the oldest bridge 1400 feet high and 74 meters long.
  • Ritymmen Root Bridge – This is 30 meters long.
  • Umkar Root Bridge – This is the short bridge and takes 30 minutes to walk to and fro. Moonson is the best time to visit this bridge as the waterfall gushes along the bridge at that time.
  • Mawsaw Root Bridge – As one walks 20-30 minutes from Umshiang Bridge, you can reach Mawsaw Root Bridge. The bridge is famous for its natural swimming pool.
