Alagar Kovil Temple is also known as Azhagar Kovil one of the prominent temples located at the foothills of Alagar Hills which is 21 KM away from Madurai. The temple attracts the number of tourists for its natural setting surroundings that dates back to the early Sangam Age.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has a great importance in Hindu Religion. The hill under which the temple resides is called as Alagar as Lord Thirumal as the Lord.

History of the Temple

The main idol in the temple is Lord Paramaswamy. Along with this, there are other temples dedicated to Lord Alagar, the brother of Goddess Meenakshi and Andal, Sudarshana and Yoga Narasimha.

There are stories behind the temple; Lord Vishnu had come to the temple for Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi for marriage. But the marriage process was completed before his arrival. After blessing, Vishnu returned back from River Vaigai Banks.

A total of 123 hymns shows the glory of the temple. The historic Epics such as Silappathikaram contain the temple greatness. The glorious history of the temple in the form of songs mentioned Alvars like Thirumangai Alvar, Nammalvar, Peri Alvar, Peyalwar, Andal and Bhoothathalvar.

Along with the Hindu religion, Jainism also has the significance of Alagar Hills. Some of the Jain Monks reside in this place in 1 BC.

One can get the various collections of inscriptions related to different dynasties. According to the legends, Pandyan King Malayadwaja Pandyan and Dharma Devashai had the lord’s disclosures at this temple. The temple has the inscriptions of Ashoka Rule.

Alagar Kovil Temple Madurai is constructed on the natural settings and historic ruins. Pandyan dynasty contributed a lot for the temple’s architectural development.  After Pandyan, Nayakas added many artistic features to this temple. The Kalyan Mandapam is of Nayakas Art.

The idols in the temple are the examples of unsurpassed craftsmanship. The idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Narasimha, Manmathan, Lord Vishnu on Garuda and Tirumala Nayaka are worth admiring.
