Gandhi Memorial Museum Madurai is one of the most famous places to visit in Madurai. This place played a crucial role in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. History of Museum

Gandhi Memorial Museum Madurai history

The Gandhi Memorial Museum Madurai is a very historical building that was used as a palace of Rani Mangammal from Naick Dynasty. The palace is known as Tamukkam Palace that was built during 1670 AD. The area is spread across 13 acres of land and is very attractive for its finest architecture.

The palace is under the rulers of other dynasties and also the colonial era of East India Company. British District Collector of Madurai used this palace as the official residence. Later, after the palace is converted into Gandhi Memorial Museum by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi it was inaugurated in 1959 by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Architecture of Gandhi Memorial Museum

The architecture of the Gandhi Memorial Museum is a very attractive thing that one cannot take away their eyes. In front of the Museum, one can see the hut, called Gandhi Kutir situated in the south of the main building. It resembles the original hut of Mahatma Gandhi in Sevagram.

The ground floor has a section of Village industry and Khadi. There is an open-air theatre situated to the south of the main building. The theatre has the capacity of accommodating around 8000 people at a time.

The Museum will be open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:45 PM all days of the week except on Fridays
