Kumarakom  Bird Sanctuary  History:

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary or the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary located in Kumarakom of Kottayam. This Bird sanctuary is situated on the banks of the lake Vembanad. The bird sanctuary houses many migratory birds.The former name of Baker’s Estate.The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is stretched to an area of 14 acres. As the sanctuary is nested on the banks of the Vembanad lake also known as the Kavanar river one can go for boating along the lake.

The Bird Sanctuary is famous for the migratory birds like Siberian Stork, egret, heron, darter and the other local birds. As the sanctuary situated on the lake one can hire a houseboat or a motorboat to watch the various birds of the sanctuary. It is available throughout the year but it looks splendid in the months of June and August
