Omkareshwar Temple History
Omkareswaram is the one of the jyotirlinga in the Hindu temples. And it is believed that here the shrine is swayambu with huge power of Lord Shiva. And it is located at the bank of river Narmada. In ancient times this temple is also called as Omkaramamleshwaram because it sounds as if the jyothirlinga in omkareswar is mamleshwar temple also the ancient name of Mamleshwar is Amareshwar.
Sthala Purana of Omkareshwar Temple
According to the Sthalapurana, the Daemons defeated the god’s so that the deva guru Indra was worried about this and this daemon ruined all the three worlds it is nothing but the Thrilokas. In order to empower the devas, Lord Shiva, to come back with the Jyothirroopa as Omkareshwara.so he came with the Linga roop in the banks of the river Narmada.All devas worshipped him as an Omkareshwara to get their powers back.
Brahma and Vishnu also lived in this place on the banks of river Narmada. So that’s the reason here in the banks of Narmada Brahmapuri, Vishnupuri and Radrapuri are built hence it is also called as the “Tripuri Kshetra”, The Amareshwar Jyothirlinga is also located in the Rudrapuri.
According to the Puranas Yavanaswa Putra Mandhata came into power with the help of Indra, he worshipped Lord Shiva with dedication and love and Lord Shiva was pleased with him, as a result, The Narmada water appeared from the top of Omkar Jyotirlinga and flowed down. There is a Belief that when bubbles appear in the spring, Lord Shiva is happy.
History of Omakareshwar
Historically the construction of this Omkareshwar temple is unknown. AS per the Historical evidence at 1063 it was constructed.parama king udayadthya installed four pillars with the some Sanskrit stotras.
It is known that the tribals were the first occupants to the Island and Kalika Devi was there deity. so the Kalika Devi pilgrims was start harassing the devotees and often sacrificed, Saint Dariyayinath took charge and change the things and made the place safe to reach the Omkareshwar very safely.
The Omkareshwara temple has a huge Sabha mantap with the well architecture using Nagara style and having 60 huge brown stone pillars each of 14 feet. In the Year 1195,Raja Singh chauhan won over the Bhils and built a palace near the Omkareshwara temple which was destroyed but still can visit this palace. He renovated the temple and developed the temple grandeaur by many aspects.
