The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is located near the lake banks of Rudra Sagar Lake.

The temple complex of Mahakaleshwar posses 40 temples around it, they are almost constructed in 10th century. The Mahakaleshwar temple posses three – storied morphology, the 1st floor shows the Lingam of  ” Mahakaleshwar “, on the 2nd floor shows Lingam of  “Omkareshwar “, and the 3rd floor shows the Lingam of ” Nagachandeshwara “, the Nagachandeshwara lingam that is the 3rd floor is specially opened on Nagapanchami.

Nearly 84 shrines have resided in Mahakaleshwar temple complex of Mahadev in Ujjain.

Ujjain Mahakaleshwar History

According to the Puranas, the Lord Brahma established the first temple of the Mahakaleshwar temple complex. The old coins of Ujjain of 4th BC posses the images of Lord Shiva over them. The fame of the Mahakaleshwar temple is been depicted in many poems such as Meghadutam by Kalidasa..etc.

The ancient history says that this temple was earlier destructed later it was again reconstructed in the 11th century by Udayaditya and Naravarman.

Several dynasties like the Guptas, Maitrakas, Chalukyas, Kalachuris, Pusyabhutis, Gurjara Pratiharas and Rashtrakutas have ruled Ujjain over different periods of time. According to several poetic texts, in the Paramara period, the temple was destroyed by invaders. In later years of the eleventh century, it was re-built by Udayaditya and Naravarman. The Lingam of Mahakaleshwar temple is the Swayambu that is it is self-manifested in nature. hence the Mahakaleshwar is termed as Lord of Time. Here the Lingam faced towards the west direction it means facing toward Mruthyu (Death), hence the Lingam is also known as Dakshinamurthy. The Jyotirlingam of Mahakaleshwar is the largest Jyotirlingam of the twelve.

The speciality of the Mahakaleshwar temple is the rituals performed like the aarti specially Bhasma Aarti, in ancient days the Bhasma Aarti was used to be performed by using humans ash now presently it is been performed by ash made up of cow dung (Veeboothi). the other speciality of Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga temple is that this is the only temple where Lord Shiva asanas (sits) on the throne of a ten-hooded snake (Sarpa). Each floor of the temple is unique and special in their own way.
