The temple was originally built during the session of 1846 AD during the Maharaja Nara Singh reign. This temple was constructed with two gold plated tombs on the top of the temple, the architecture of the temple is elegant and the temple atmosphere is peace and pleasant surrounded by a garden and a small pond. This temple is next to the palace of the former ruler of the then Manipur kingdom .

The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and his Consort Radha, Temple is totally composed of six idols of the deities but the priority is given to the idol of Lord Vishnu. The temple also shows the temple of Lord Jagannath. An Ocean full of devotees and tourists of different cast and creed rush to the Temple for worship. This picturesque implicates the message Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam which means “the World is one family”.

The songs, bajanas, aartis..etc dedicated to the Lord gives a message of unity and integration . King Bhagya Chandra carved the idol of the Lord of  Shree Govindajee Temple that is Lord Krishna. This temple is the largest Hindu and Vaishnava temple of Manipur.
