Chandi Devi Temple is one of the famous temples in Haridwar. This temple is located on the top of Neel Parvat. This temple attracts thousands of pilgrims every year from all over the country. The temple is the home for Goddess Chandi Devi which is an avatar while killing the demon Shumbha-Nishumbha. The temple is built in 1929 and Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century installed the main idol in the temple.

About the Temple

According to Hindu mythology, the demons Shumbh and Nishumbha took the kingdom from Lord Indra. They started to rule over the gods in heaven too. The gods met Lord Shiva and Parvathi to find the solution and hence Goddess Parvati to an avatar of Chandika Devi. By seeing Chandika Devi Shumbh wishes to marry her but the girl denied to marry him. The demon became angry and enraged combat. Goddess had a battle with the kings and the army for that and Goddess first killed the army chief and later the Kings Shumbh and Nishumbh. As the battle took place on Neel Parvat the temple is built as a tribute for this incident.

Architecture and Things to do on the Temple

The temple can be reached by the devotees in 2 ways. One by trekking and others by the Ropeway. As the temple is located on the top of the hill the devotees must travel by any of the means. The temple architecture is itself an example of simplicity and respectful posture.  One can enjoy the bird’s view and the entire city view from the top of the hill.

Trek and Ropeway to the hill

As said about the ways to reach the hill by trekking and ropeway options. Tourists should trek for about 3 KM from Chandighat. This trekking can be done by all the tourists from beginners in trekking to the experts as the place offers mild steeps and few obstacles on its way.

The ropeway is another option to reach the temple. The distance one has to travel on the ropeway is about 5 KM and one can experience the beautiful view of nature and the city on its way to the temple.

The ropeway timings are from morning 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and afternoon from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

 The temple will be open from morning 7:00 AM to evening 7:00 PM.

Entry Fee for the Temple

The entry fee is free for any pilgrims.

How to Reach the Temple

The distance from Haridwar to the temple is 2 KM and one can reach the temple within 5 minutes by car.
