The Kharchi Puja is the famous festival celebrated in the Chaturdasha Temple or Fourteen god temple located in the Mekhlipara of Tripura. The Kharchi Puja is celebrated after 15 days of Ambubachi. The Ambubachi is the menstrual duration of the mother goddess, to clean up the postmenstrual course of the deities the Kharchi Puja is celebrated.
This Puja is celebrated for 7 days (Week), after Ambubachi. People of Tripura and peoples from all over the country also from the neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar desperately awaited of this Kharchi Puja.
During Kharchi Puja the main priest (Raj Chantai) along with other priests perform the puja. All the idols of the Chaturdasha temple taken to the sacred river Hawrah for holy bath or Mahasananm (Adhibhash) of the deities. This process is continued every morning of the Kharchi Puja. After Mahasananm, the idols of the deities are taken back to the main temple and the other rituals and formalities are continued.
The Puja hosts up Mela and other cultural programs which grabs people attention from various parts of the country. It is believed that this festival unites the Tribal and Non-tribal people also for removal or washing out of the sins. As the word Kharchi derived from the Tripuri “ Khar or Kharta as Sin and Chi or Si means cleaning”. The Kharchi puja literally means the cleaning of sins people from various areas of the country rushes to the 14 gods temple to remove their sins.
