Shore temple in Mahabalipuram is located on the Shores of Bay of Bengal. The temple was built in 8th century AD with the blocks of Granite and was constructed during the Pallava Dynasty by Narasimhavarma II.  From the year 1984, the UNESCO World Heritage Site regarded the Shore Temple as one of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram.

History

Shore temple is regarded as one of the Seven Pagodas. The architectural creation of the temple complex was initiated by King Narasimhavarman II in the mid-7th century. The granite rock-cut carvings the proof of the brilliance of the Artisans.

The Shore temple is the 1st stone structure built by the Pallavas. The temple was carved out of the rocks and is a five-stored structure built in Dravidian Style Architecture. The temple was located on the 50 feet square lower slab at the base of a column and extended pyramidal structure of 60 feet. This is one of the oldest structural stone temples in South India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Shivlingam and at the rear end, 2 idols face each other they are Ksatriyasimneswara and Lord Vishnu. In this temple, Lord Vishnu is seen reclining on the Seshanag.

The temple’s interior and exteriors are elaborately carved and sculptured. The images on the sculptured panels were very natural illustrated to everyday life are very artistic and realistic. The temple is surrounded by Nandi on all sides of the outer wall.
