About National Museum in New Delhi.
National Museum in New Delhi is one of the largest museums in India and is a must-visit place on their visit to Delhi. The museum was established in 1949 and from then it became heaven for the people who are very eager to explore history, heritage and archaeology. The museum houses more than 2 lakh works and artifacts from ancient to the modern which covers all the artifacts around 5000 years. This is the government maintained and funded place.
History of the National Museum
An exhibition on Indian artifacts and arts were setup during winters of 1947-1948 in the Royal Academy of London. In 1949 an exhibition as setup in the premises of Rashtrapati Bhawan. As this exhibition has a massive success the government decided to set up a permanent National Museum. On August 15th, 1949, the museum was inaugurated by C Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India in the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
In 1955 the museum was shifted to the current location and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in 1960. Now the museum was managed by Ministry of Culture, the Government of India.
Inside the Museum
There are different departments in the Museum that covers all types of artifacts and collections. The museum houses 16 departments that preserve the ancient heritage. Prehistoric archaeology, Manuscripts, Paintings, Archaeology, Numismatic and Epigraphy, Decorative Arts, Arms and armour, Pre-Columbian art, Central Asian Antiquities, Jewellery, Education, Anthropology, Public Relations, Conservation, and display are the 16 departments in the Museum.
The National Museum of India has 21 collections of Galleries. They are
Harappan Gallery – This gallery is known as Indus Valley Civilization and Indo Saraswati Civilization. Here Harappan artifacts are preserved.
Maurya, Shunga and Satvahana Arts Gallery – This Gallery houses the objects from 4th Century BC to 1st Century BC.
Gupta Gallery – The Gupta Dynasty’s scriptures and artwork from the 4th century and 6th century CE are displayed in this Gupta Gallery.
Decorative Arts Gallery – This gallery is divided into 2 sections. One consists of objects made of Ivory, Ceramics, and Jade. The other consists of metal and wood objects.
Kushana Gallery – This gallery houses the arts and things of the Kushana Dynasty rulers.
Medieval Arts Gallery – This gallery is divided into 2 sections. Early Medieval and Late Medieval which has a combination of Vardhanas, Maitrakas, Pratiharas, Pallavas, Cholas, and Chalukya. Chandelas, Hoysalas, Nayalas, Parmaras, Gajapatis, Chauhans and Senas houses in this Gallery.
Bronze Gallery – This gallery exhibits Natraja, Parsvath, Chubisi and many more.
Miniature Paintings Gallery – This gallery consists of 17000 miniature paintings. These categorizes the various periods of Deccani, Rajasthani, Pahari, Mughal etc in this Gallery.
Evolution of Indian Scripts and Coins Gallery – The gallery displays the Indian Coin system and Scripts.
Buddhist Artefacts Gallery – This Gallery comprises of Terracotta, Stone, Wood, Bronze, and Stucco. Hinayana, Vajrayana and Mahayana are the 3 principals of Buddhist forms.
Manuscripts Gallery – The manuscript gallery houses palm leaf, metals, paper, birch bark, parchment.
Maritime Heritage Gallery – This gallery exhibits the naval tactics.
Coins Gallery – This gallery exhibits the traditional to modern ways. From coins system to the credit/debit cards.
Central Asian Gallery – This exhibits various wooden, silk banners, terracotta sculptures, wall paintings, pottery and porcelain objects and objects made from leather, fiber, grass, gold and silver.
Tanjore and Mysore Paintings Gallery – This gallery displays Indian Mythology, Epics, Gods, Goddesses, etc.
Pre-Columbian and Western Art Gallery – This gallery consists of objects from different countries like Inca. Mexico, Salvador, Panama, Peru, Maya and etc.
Textile Gallery – this gallery consists of the used textiles from the Mughal period such as Silk, Woolen, Cottom, Prints, Embroidery, and dye, etc.
Tribal Lifestyle of North East India Gallery – The gallery comprises of the artifacts from 8 eastern states.
Wood Carving Gallery – this gallery exhibits wooden artifacts from India, Tibet, and Nepal.
Sharan Rani Backliwak Musical Instruments Gallery – this gallery consists of all the musical instruments related to classical, tribal and folk.
Arms and Armour Gallery – This gallery consists of major arms and armours from the Mughal period including Maratha, Rajput, Sikh arms.

The entry fee for Adults is Rs 20
Foreigners along with the audio guide the ticket cost is Rs 650.

From Tuesday to Sunday the Museum will be open from 10:00 AM till evening 6:00 PM
Time to spend
Tourists can spend a maximum of 2 to 3 hours in the museum to explore the things.
Photography
Photography is allowed, no extra fee for cameras is charged but the videography is not allowed inside the museum.

Delhi Airport to the museum – 14 KM and can take a maximum of 40 minutes to reach the place.
Delhi Railway station to the museum – 12 KM and can take a maximum of 30 minutes to reach the place.
