Thattekad Bird Sanctuary History:
The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary located in Kerala is stretched to an area of 25.16 square kilometers. This is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary was described as the richest bird habitat in Peninsular India by the famous orthinologist, Salim Ali. This beautiful sanctuary situated at the largest river of Kerala, that is the Periyar River. As the sanctuary is evergreen and provided with the support of the Periyar river which provides the perfect environment for both the forest and water birds to reside. Hence the sanctuary is rich in both forest and water birds. The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is also known as the “Cuckoo Paradise” as the sanctuary exhibits a rich population of the Cuckoo birds and their related species. This bird sanctuary resides near to the Edamalayar forest, which is near to the Edamalayar River, all these factors act as tributaries welcome a huge crowd of a variety of birds which is the fascinating point of the Thattekkad.
