Dakshineswar Kali Temple History
Once Rani Rashmoni decided to go Kashi yatra with her Relatives, servants, and suppliers one day she dreamed about Goddess Kali and said that no need to go Kashi to pray for me instead you can worship in the bank of Ganges river and then I shall manifest myself to accept the poojas from my devotees.
Then Rani Decided to build a temple for Goddess Kali, but we were under the British rule and she purchased a land over 20 acres at the small village of Dakshineswar from English men John Hastie and old Muslim burial ground shaped like tortoise and considered to worship with the tantras of shakti she built a temple in between 1847-1855,It took eight years to complete the construction and Nine hundred thousand rupees for construction. And Finally, the idol installation was done on May 31st, 1855, Snana yatra day. The rituals of the deity were performed by the Ram Kumar Chattopadhyay as head priest and later it was hand over to Rama Krishna Parama Hamsa. Rama Krishna Paramahamsa has taken care of the temple over 30 years along with his wife Sarada Devi. After construction is finished rani Rashmoni lived only for 5 years 9 months after the inauguration of the temple.Rama Krishna Paramahamsa was taking the responsibility about the temple holiness, name, fame and pilgrims to the temple.
Architecture :
Temple is built in a Bengali style with the tradition of the Nava-Ratna or Nine apex style. It is three-storeyed building with the south facing temple as Nava Ratna.and continued till the upper two storey’s with the high flight of stairs it measures about 46 feet square and 100 feet long.
The main temple sanctum an idol of goddess Kali called as Bhavtarini, standing on the chest of lord Shiva, and the two idols are placed on a thousand-petalled lotus made from silver.
Close to the main temple, there are 12 Shiva temples built in typical Aat-Chala Bengal Architecture and one Radha Krishna temple towards Northeast of the Main Temple.
