Great Nicobar Island

Great Nicobar Island is the southernmost largest island and in the north of Sumatra. The Island is named “Cui Lan Island” in the 15th century and in 2004, due to the affect of the Indian Ocean earthquake Tsunami many were dead and were cut off from all the contact from the world for more than two days.

The Nicobar Island was spread over 921 sq. Km.  The place is home to a lot of wildlife and is covered by the rainforest.  The Island is home for Shompen People. The island arc is created by the collision of the Indo-Australian Plate with Eurasia.

Unlike the Andaman Island, Nicobar Islands require some permits to enter the Island. On 31st May 2013, Nicobar Islands are declared as the World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

The area is surrounded by the 12 KM wide “forest buffer zone”. This Biosphere Reserve in India was declared in January 2013 and is one of the 9 major bio reserves in India. The Bio Reserve is the home for many species of flora and fauna.

Some of the animal species in the reserve are Nicobar long-tailed macaque, edible-nest swiftlet, Nicobar scrubfowl, Malayan box turtle, reticulated python and giant robber crab.

Indira Point

Indira Point Great Nicobar Island

Indira Point is situated in Great Nicobar Administrative Division of Andaman and Nicobar Island. This point is previously known as the Pygmalion Point and Parsons Point. In mid-1980s the point with respect to Indira Gandhi the peak was renamed from the Pygmalion point. The place on 30th April 1972 commissioned the lighthouse service.

About 163 KM south of the point, Rondo Island is located in the Sabang District. To collaborate a channel between Nicobar Island and the Rondo Island, India and Indonesia are planning to construct a port at Sabang.
