Kanipakam Temple History
The temple was constructed during the reign of Kuothunga Chola in the 11th century which was renovated by Vijayanagar Kings in 1336 AD. As per the folklore, the Self-manifested idol was identified by 3 persons who are blind, dumb and deaf. These 3 used to cultivate land near Viharipuri. On a fine day, water was little in the well which is not enough for cultivation. One person noticed the stone and hit the stone with a spade. Surprisingly they have noticed the blood oozing out of the stone. The three handicapped became normal on touching the water mixed with blood. Three persons rushed to the village and informed all. The villagers recovered the injured Idol of Vinayaka from the Earth. The blood flow was continuing who offered thousands of coconuts for the deity. The coconut water spreads on one and a half acre. Earlier this place was called by Kaniparakam later changed to “Kanipakam”.
The uniqueness of this temple is that Swayambhu keeps growing. Temple administration keeps changing the ornaments size year by year. Temple will be heavily crowded during Vinayaka Chaturthi, due to Annual Brahmotsavam festival. Pramanam (taking oath) at this temple is popular to test the genuineness of the devotees.
