Puri Jagannath Temple Festivals
- Chandan Yatra: Lord Jagannath takes bath in Narendra Pokhari, pious water body. It happens on Akshaya Tritiya, in the month of Vaisakha.
- Snana Yatra: Lord Jagannath with Shree Balabhadra comes to Snana Vedi Mandap from the Main temple. There they take 108 pitchers of water mixed with sandalwood paste, camphor, and other incenses. After the great bath, they wear an Elephant mask which is known as ‘Gajanana Besha’. It celebrates on Purnima of Jyestha month.
- Ratha Yatra: The Ratha Yatra in Puri is the worldwide famous festival of India. Lord comes on a huge chariot to meet the whole city who can’t come inside the temple. These chariots move from the main temple to ‘Gundicha Ghar’ for 7 days, where Shree Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, Shree Jagannath, and Shree Sudarshan are seated in their different chariots. It starts on Ashadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya from Hindu Calendar.
- Sayana Yatra: It celebrates on 11th day of Ashadha Shukla Paksha from Hindu Calendar. It is believed that Lord Vishnu falls asleep, in Ksheersagara – the cosmic ocean of Milk, and on Shesh Naga – the Cosmic Serpent. Lord finally awakens from his slumber four months later on Prabhodini Ekadashi, the 11th day of Kartik Shukla Paksha.
- Daksinayana Yatra: Sun moves to the autumnal equinox. It celebrates Kartaka Sankranti.
- Parshwa Parivartana: It celebrates on 11th day of the Bhadraba Shukla Paksha from Hindu Calendar. The deities enjoying sleep change sides on this day.
- Deva Utthapana: It celebrates on Lord awakening day from his slumber four months, i.e., Prabhodini Ekadashi, the 11th day of Kartik Shukla Paksha.
- Pravarana Sasthi: Lord wears color woolen cloth for the winter season. It celebrates Margasira Shukla Paksha Shashti.
- Pushyavisheka: It celebrates, for Lord wears God Attire and sits on the Ratna Simhasana, on the Pausha Shukla Paksha Purnima.
- Makar Sankranti Yatra: Sun moves towards the northern hemisphere. It happens on Makar Sankranti and also known as Uttarayana Yatra.
- Dola Yatra: It starts on the 10th Day of Phalgun Shukla Paksha to Purnima of Phalgun Shukla Paksha, where Lord Dolagovinda, Shreedevi, and Bhudevi are carried to Dolavedi a high Pavillion.
- Damanaka Chaturdashi: It Celebrates the 13th and 14th day of the Chaitra Shukla Paksha. Lord Ram and Lord Krishna go to Jagannath Ballava Matha, cohere the deity’s pick-up their dear leaves ‘Dayana’ from Matha Garden and the 14th day, the leaves are offered to Lords.
- Neeladri Mahodaya: It celebrates on 8th day of Baisakhi Shukla Paksha. Abhisheka Ritual is performed on this day with 108 pots of consecrated water are offered to the deities.
